The legendary emperor of China Fu Hsi (xi) is said to have discovered a mythical turtle emerging from the river LO, bearing on it's back an arrangement of numbers from 1 to 9, this arrangement is known as the Lo Shu or the magic square. Fu Hsi used this arrangement as the key to unlocking the PA KUA.
Below is a diagram of the original Early Heaven sequence. Below are just some of the reasons why we use the original Early Heaven sequence for all our calculations.

Trigram name = KUN      Number = 1      Family = Mother                              Direction = North
Trigram name = SUN      Number = 2      Family = Eldest Daughter            Direction = S-West
Trigram name = LI          Number = 3      Family = Middle Daughter                Direction = East
Trigram name = TUI        Number = 4      Family = Youngest Daughter       Direction = S-East
Trigram name = KEN       Number = 6      Family = Youngest Son               Direction = N-West
Trigram name = KAN       Number = 7      Family = Middle Son                       Direction = West
Trigram name = CHEN     Number =8      Family = Eldest Son               Direction = North East
Trigram name = CHIEN    Number =9      Family = Father                              Direction = South

                          = UNBROKEN YANG (white)                  = BROKEN YIN (black)

Here an element of Yang in the Yin section reminding us that there is a little light in the darkness and completing the balance. Because nothing is ever completely Black or White. Feng Shui is all about balance.

Here an element of Yin in the Yang section reminding us that there is a little darkness in the light completing the balance. Feng Shui is all about balance.

Take both images above add them together and we get the famous "Tai Chi" symbol. This symbol encompasses the whole concept of Feng Shui, it shows balance completeness, and it also gives the impression of movement.

Looking closely at the Tai Chi symbol, we see an element of white in the dark section and an element of black in the white section; This serves to remind us there is an element of light in the darkness and vice a versa.

This is the LO SHU (Magic Square)

Chinese legend states that around 2860 B.C. Emperor Fu Hsi (Xi) discovered a mythical turtle emerging from the river LO, bearing on it's back an arrangement of numbers from 1 to 9 that was the key to unlocking the PA KUA. The arrangement can be seen on the image on the left. The sum of any three numbers in any direction Horizontally, Vertically or Diagonally all adds up to 15.
This three-grid pattern corresponds to the eight sides of the Pa Kua symbol centred on the ninth number (5).

The LO SHU is one of the oldest tools of Feng Shui, the Lo Shu used with the PA KUA is used to analyse a house, building, etc, etc

Concentrating on the centre number 5 we see the association 5 has with the other numbers in the LO PU.
1. 5 + 4 = 9 (clockwise movement)
2. 5 + 2 = 7 (clockwise movement)
3. 5 + 3 = 8 (anticlockwise movement)
4. 5 + 1 = 6 (anticlockwise movement)

Starting from the centre square (5) adding top left corner (4) = 9 which is the value of the next square in a clockwise movement.
Same equation for top right and centre square.
Starting from the centre square (5) moving left (3) = 8 which is the value of the next square in an anticlockwise movement.
Same equation for 5 and 1 = 6 in an anticlockwise movement.

Note: All 9 values are used and balance is maintained with 2 clockwise movements and 2 anticlockwise movements

Following all the arrows each 2 squares directly opposite each other add up to a value of 10:
8+2=10
4+6=10
3+7=10
8+2=10
9+1=10

Now lets superimpose the early heaven trigram sequence on the Lo shu square as below. Lets take a closer look at these sequences including the Trigrams.

8+2=10 = mapped onto

4+6=10 = mapped onto

3+7=10 = mapped onto

8+2=10 = mapped onto

9+1=10 = mapped onto

Notice how the YIN sections and YANG sections balance(cancel) with each other. This is complete balance.

Lets look at the family relationships.

Youngest Daughter =6 and Youngest Son = 6

Middle Daughter = 3 and Middle Son = 7

Eldest Daughter = 2 and Eldest Son = 8

Mother = 1 and Father = 9

Notice to the balance between the Family relationships, this corresponds with Trigrams and Numerical relationship.

Lets view the Lo Shu from a numerical angle, take all the odd numbers excluding the centre 5, remember we are equating these values to directions so the centre (5) is excluded.

Odd numbers 1 +3 +7 +9 = 20
Directions N - E - S - W

Now lets take all the even numbers we are equating these values to directions.

Even numbers 2 & 4 & 6 & 8 = 20
Directions NE - SE - SW - NW

Again we see the balance between the Odd numbers and the Even, both having a numerical value of 20

To the left is the compass directions in degrees lets look at them in numerical order.

1: 3+3+7+5=18=1+8=9 ==> 2+2+5=9

2: 2+0+2+5=9 ==> 2+4+7+5=18=1+8=9

3: 6+7+5=18=1+8=9 ==> 1+1+2+5=9

4: 1+1+2+5=9 ==> 1+5+7+5=18=1+8=9

6: 2+9+2+5=18=1+8=9 ==> 3+3+7+5=18=1+8=9

7: 2+4+7+5=18=1+8=9 ==> 2+9+2+5=18=1+8=9

8: 2+2+5=9 ==> 6+7+5=18=1+8=9
