How to take an accurate compass reading for use in Feng Shui.

Taking a compass reading is actually very easy as long as you follow some simple steps. If you do not have a compass already you will need to get on, drop into your local local camping store or army surplus store. I don't recommend you buy a Lo Pan Chinese compass this will set you back several hundred Euros if you even knew where to buy one.

The Hemisphere Hype

Which way is south?

There are many debates raging about the Chinese south being different to our western south. No matter where you are in the world south is south and north is north. The only confusing issue regarding direction readings is Magnetic and Geographical north. Let me explain.

A compass is just a steel needle that's magnetized so that one end of the needle is always pointing towards the earth's magnetic north pole. However the earth's Magnetic North Pole is not located at the same place as the earth's Geographical North Pole.

Geographical North Pole:
The Earth spins once every 24 hours about its axis of rotation. The geographical North Pole is the place where this axis meets the earth's surface at 90° North.

Magnetic North Pole:
The Earth's magnetic field has both strength and direction, the latter being measured in angles of declination and dip. The point where the field direction is vertically downwards is the Magnetic North Di-pole (Magnetic North Pole). Here the dip is 90°.

Which north to use in Feng Shui:

The only North direction used in Feng Shui is Magnetic North, this means we use the Compass directions only.

Tips on taking a correct compass direction reading:

1. Hold compass at waist level.

2. Remove of all jewellery on hands and wrists and Belt Buckles.

3. Stand clear from cars or large metal objects.

4. Take at least 4 readings from different areas.
