Feng Shui (pronounced "fung shwee" , "fong shway"
or "fung shway") is the science of living in harmony
with your environment. Feng Shui literally means "Wind"
and "Water". Chinese believe The
universe is made up of two forces or energies, both of which compliment/balance
with each other. The merging of these two energies are YIN
and YANG. The concept of the Universe containing this energy
call CHI is a fundamental part of Feng Shui.
In ancient China, Feng Shui was a closely guarded discipline used
as a tool to ensure the good health, wealth, and power of the
imperial dynasties. The keepers of this secret knowledge were
the Feng Shui masters, these highly respected scientists, and
mathematicians and astronomers were charged with sustaining the
good fortune and prosperity of the royal court. These Feng Shui
masters used many tools in their quest, one such tool was the
Lo Pan compass.
One of the most important figures in Feng Shui was an emperor
called Fu Hsi (xi) is said to have discovered a mythical turtle
emerging from the river LO, bearing on it's back an arrangement
of numbers from 1 to 9, this arrangement is known as the Lo
Shu or the magic square. Fu Hsi used this arrangement as the
key to unlocking the PA KUA. Fu Hsi used
this arrangement to create the the Trigrams
which the Pa Kua is based on.
Over 1600 years after Fu Hsi, King Wen rearranged the Fu Hsi sequence
to represent interactive cycles of growth and decay. King Wen's
Pa Kua arrangement was based on environmental changes at that
time. King Wen's arrangement is referred to as the Later Heaven
sequence, he then rearranged the trigrams, and brought them together
to form the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching.
King Wen gave each hexagram its name
and wrote the Judgements on their fundamental meanings. each Hexagram
is created using the original Trigrams.
